Chapter Twelve: The Tree That Learned to Say No

The Butterfly Series, Book One: Cocoon Rooted

A generous tree offered shade to every traveler, fruit to every animal, and branches to every bird. She loved helping, so she said yes whenever anyone asked.

Over time, her branches became tired. Her fruit disappeared before it could ripen. Even her roots felt weak.

An owl asked, “What do you need?” The tree had never considered the question.

The next day, she told some visitors, “Not today. I need time to rest and grow.” A few were disappointed, but the forest did not end. Her true friends stayed nearby without demanding more.

As the tree practiced saying no, her leaves grew fuller and her fruit returned. She learned that boundaries did not make her unkind. They helped her protect the life she wanted to share.

Rooted Reflection

  1. When is it difficult for you to say no?
  2. How does your body tell you that you need a boundary?
  3. What is one respectful sentence you can use?

Glow Notes

  • No is a complete and caring answer.
  • My needs matter too.
  • Boundaries protect my peace and my relationships.

Protecting Your Roots

Practice saying, “I am not comfortable with that,” “I need time to think,” and “No, thank you.” Choose the sentence that feels most natural and say it with a calm voice.
